Overview of the 2025 PSLE English Examination
The PSLE English Language examination is based on the English Language Teaching and Learning Syllabus 2020 (Primary), implemented for examination from 2025. It tests your child across four papers — Writing, Language Use & Comprehension, Listening, and Oral Communication — with a total of 200 marks.
Key change from 2025 onwards
The 2025 PSLE English syllabus reflects the updated EL Teaching and Learning Syllabus 2020. Parents of P4–P6 students should use resources referencing the 2025 syllabus, not older materials based on the previous format.
The 4 Papers at a Glance
Paper 1 – Writing (25%)
Part 1: Situational Writing (14 marks)
Students write a short functional piece — such as a letter, email, or report — suited to a given purpose, audience, and context. Marks are awarded for content (fulfilling the task requirements) and language (grammar, vocabulary, punctuation).
Part 2: Continuous Writing (36 marks)
Students write a composition of at least 150 words in continuous prose. Three pictures are provided on the topic, and the composition must be based on at least one of them. Students are assessed on ideas, organisation, and language accuracy.
What examiners look for in Continuous Writing
- A clear beginning, middle, and end
- Vivid descriptions and precise vocabulary
- Varied sentence structures
- Consistent tense usage
- Relevant, well-developed ideas tied to the picture(s)
Paper 2 – Language Use & Comprehension (45%)
Paper 2 carries the highest weightage and is split into Booklet A (MCQ) and Booklet B (Open-ended). It tests both language accuracy and reading comprehension at literal, inferential, and evaluative levels.

Paper 3 – Listening Comprehension (10%)
Twenty MCQ questions test your child's ability to understand a variety of spoken texts — including texts that recount, inform, explain, argue, and persuade. Graphic representations are used for the first seven items. Each audio text is played twice.
Paper 4 – Oral Communication (20%)
Part 1: Reading Aloud (15 marks)
Students read a passage aloud with clear pronunciation, appropriate pacing, and expression that suits the purpose and audience.
Part 2: Stimulus-based Conversation (25 marks)
Students engage in a conversation with examiners based on a photo stimulus. They are expected to express personal opinions and ideas clearly, using accurate grammar and a range of vocabulary.
How to Help Your Child Prepare
- Start early. Build a strong foundation in P3 and P4 — don't wait until P6 to address grammar gaps.
- Read widely. Regular reading (fiction, news, non-fiction) naturally builds vocabulary and comprehension.
- Practise timed writing. 1 hour 10 minutes goes quickly. Students need to practise planning and writing within time.
- Drill weaker components first. Paper 2 carries 45% — focus on Comprehension (20 marks) and Grammar Cloze (10 marks).
- Speak English at home. Oral is 20% of the score. Regular English conversation builds fluency and confidence naturally.
A note on Synthesis & Transformation
Each S&T question is worth 2 marks with no partial marks — the entire answer must be correct to score. This makes it one of the highest-risk components. Early and consistent practice pays off significantly here.
